Bert Potter was a founder of a New Zealand-based commune, ‘Centrepoint’. He was also an engineer, businessman, and former army.

Potter came into the limelight after being arrested in 1990 for drug abuse. He was also convicted of 13 charges of indecently abusing 5 girls and was sentenced to 7 years in prison.

After the release, Bert still believed that he had done nothing wrong. Also, he speculated that the intimacy between children and adults was natural and desirable.

As of now, a local documentary Heaven and Hell is released based on the commune and its leader.

Bert Potter met his wife Leteia at the Otago University.

They tied the knot and moved to Tauranga to run their business. Since the business was not profitable, the couple shifted to Auckland. Bert then became a salesman at Electrolux vaccum cleaner company.

After a huge success at his job, Bert formed a carpet cleaning and pest control business. Meanwhile, the couple gave birth to son John and daughter Anne.

Further, they adopted two girls, Karen and Ross. But, Potter and his wife got divorced after he established ‘Shoreline Human Awareness Trust’.

Centrepoint’s leader Bert Potter died on 6 May 2012 at the age of 86.

Factually speaking, he was born on 2 May 1925 as Herbert Thomas Potter. His parents were Fanny and Dick. He also had a younger brother named Lyndsay.

In 1977, Bert formed a commune Centrepoint, which turned into a religion. However, something illegal was growing was under the name of a commune.

With enough evidence, in 1990, Potter was arrested for drug abuse. After that, he was convicted of sexual assault and indecency and served 7 years of prison.

The commune exposed youths and children to drugs and sexual abuse, psychological manipulation, and whatnot. In 2000, the commune was dismantled.

Currently, the site is renamed and owned by Prema Charitable Trust.
