Once upon a time, Bruce Irvin was a high school dropout struggling to survive on the streets of Atlanta. Bouts of homelessness and even a jail stint followed, but the young man refused to give up. These days, Irvin is one of the biggest stars in the NFL. He has played for several teams and also won the 2013 Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. Want to know more about Irvin’s inspiring life story? Then, we have got all the details right here.

Who is Bruce Irvin?

Born as Bruce Pernell Irvin Jr. on the 1st of November 1987, the NBA star is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. His father’s name is Rufus Lee while his mother’s name is Bessie Lee. There is no record of any siblings. Irvin spent his formative years in Georgia and was primarily raised by his mom. He initially attended Stockbridge High School but dropped out in his junior year. His mom subsequently kicked him out and he spent several months squatting with friends. He eventually found himself on the streets and dabbled into the drug business. Irvin was however forced to turn his life around after two close calls.

The first was in May 2007 when he and two others, broke into a house to steal. He was apprehended and spent two and a half weeks in jail. The second incident was in November 2007, when he narrowly missed a police raid on a drug house where he had been residing. Both incidents served as a wakeup call and the young man decided to clean up his act. He returned home to his mom and completed his GED. He subsequently attended a community college before ending up at the University of West Virginia. In his two years at Virginia, Bruce Irvin was a member of the school’s football team. After finishing with a record of 61 tackles, 22.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles, he also received All-Big East conference honors.

NFL Career

Despite his outstanding college exploits, as well as his strong combine numbers, many NFL scouts overlooked Irvin as a result of some disciplinary issues. The young man, however, remained undeterred and proved the naysayers wrong when he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the very first round of the 2012 NFL draft. Irvin spent a total of four years with the Seahawks during which he recorded 131 tackles, 22.0 sacks, and defended seven passes.

He helped his team to multiple playoff berths as well as victory in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Georgia native personally recorded two solo tackles as the Seahawks defeated Denver Broncos to clinch the coveted trophy. Irvin’s contract with the Seahawks ended in 2016 and he has now gone on to play for several other teams. They include The Oakland Raiders (March 2016 – November 2018), The Atlanta Falcons (November 2018 – March 2019), and The Carolina Panthers (March 2019 – till date).

His Contract and Salary Earnings

Bruce Irvin has signed several lucrative contracts since joining the NFL. His rookie contract was a four-year deal, worth $9.34 million, which he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in May 2002. On the expiration of that deal, the outside linebacker joined The Oakland Raiders on a four-year contract, worth $37 million, in March 2016. Irvin is presently on a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers.

The deal is worth $4 million and would see him receive an annual basic salary of $1.5 million. He will also receive a signing bonus of $1.5 million as well as an additional game bonus of $1 million. Meanwhile, Irvin has lost money as a result of unsportsmanlike behavior. The player was fined $10,000 for instigating a brawl during Super Bowl XLIX in February 2015. He was also ejected from the game and made history as the first-ever player to be ejected from the Super Bowl.

Who is Bruce Irvin’s Wife?

Bruce Irvin is married to a fellow gifted athlete named Alyssa Hackworth-Irvin. Alyssa is a star tennis player, who played college tennis at George Washington University and the University of Charleston. She has won several titles, including two team state championships, three doubles title, the West Virginia inter-collegiate athletic conference regular season and tournament title, the 2007 public courts women’s open doubles title, the 2009 women’s opens doubles championships, etc.

Irvin and Hackworth started dating in 2012 and tied the knot in May 2014. The amazing couple now has one child together; a son named Brayden who was born in 2013. They hope that their son will inherit their athleticism. They, however, did not want him to go into football but would rather prefer him playing safer sports such as baseball or tennis.
