Before being appointed the commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Mary worked as the program director at Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. She was very much into the African Health Initiative during that time. Since the year 2017, she has been serving as one of the members of the National Academy of Medicine.
