Max Lucado Author and Church

Growing up in a conservative home in a small West Texas town, Max needed much grace from his oil mechanic father and nurse mother. Max hit his teens years and rebellion kicked in.

After one specific drunken night, Max had an awakening and began to wonder if there was more to life than parties and chasing girls. It was not long after that when his heart was moved toward the unconditional love of God through a Bible class while attending Abilene Christian University (ACU).

Max returned with a passion for his studies gaining a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from ACU. After graduation, Max set out on his mission to communicate the grace and mercy of God he had discovered.

His first assignment was as the associate pastor of a small church in Miami, Florida, where he was able to develop his passion for people, ministry, and writing through a column in their weekly newsletter.

In Florida, he also married Denalyn, now his wife of more than three decades. In 1983, Max and Denalyn moved to Rio de Janeiro to help plant churches. During their five years in Brazil, Max continued to write, updating friends and family about their ministry.

Eventually, Max gathered the Rio newsletters and Florida columns into a manuscript and sent them off to fifteen publishers. After multiple rejections, one publisher finally said yes.

That first book, On the Anvil, was published in 1985. His 34th trade book, Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World (September 2017), is a balm for those who are trying to find peace and grace in a world that is increasingly filled with unrest.

In 2016, more than 80 boxes of Max’s manuscripts, journals and personal correspondence has been curated at his alma mater, Abilene Christian University, as a part of the new Max Lucado Collection to be archived and displayed at ACU’s Brown Library.

His writing has been translated into more than 54 languages and has been featured in countless national media outlets. Lucado was dubbed “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today, Reader’s Digest called him “The Best Preacher in America,” and The New York Times named him one of the most influential leaders in social media.

In addition to books, Lucado’s writing has been shaped into an additional 20 million products sold, including videos, devotionals, songs, plush toys, greeting cards, booklets, Bible studies, commentaries, and theatrically-released movies.

Max Lucado quotes

“A woman’s heart should be so hidden in God that a man has to seek Him just to find her.”“Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right.”“You are the only you God made… God made you and broke the mold.”“Forgive and give as if it were your last opportunity. Love like there’s no tomorrow, and if tomorrow comes, love again.”“When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want? Will you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be people. If relationships will matter most then, shouldn’t they matter most now?”“Forgiveness is unlocking the door to set someone free and realizing you were the prisoner!”“If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning… Face it, friend. He is crazy about you! ”“You weren’t an accident. You weren’t mass-produced. You aren’t an assembly-line product. You were deliberately planned, specifically gifted, and lovingly positioned on the earth by the Master Craftsman.”“God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus. ”“To lead the orchestra, you have to turn your back on the crowd.”“I choose gentleness… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise? If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer? If I make a demand, may it be only of myself?”“Lower your expectations of earth. This isn’t Heaven, so don’t expect it to be.”

Max Lucado the story

The Story features a foreword by Lucado and Randy Frazee. This book tells the grandest, most compelling story of all time: the story of a true God who loves his children, who established for them a way of salvation and provided a route to eternity.

Max Lucado oak hills church

Lucado was hired as a pastor to the Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio, Texas in 1988. He stopped taking a salary from the church in 1990 because he was already an established successful author.

During his time, Oak Hills began using musical instruments in worship services and held the belief that baptism isn’t required for salvation (two key doctrines of the Churches of Christ); ultimately Oak Hills dropped its affiliation with them in 2003, calling itself simply “Oak Hills Church”.

After working as the senior pastor at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, TX for 20 years, he announced in early 2007 that he was stepping down due to health concerns related to atrial fibrillation.

Lucado has since resumed the more limited ministry role of writing and preaching at Oak Hills with co-pastor Randy Frazee, formerly of Willow Creek Community Church of South Barrington, Illinois.

Max Lucado just like Jesus

God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus. Can you think of a better offer?

Jesus felt no guilt; God wants you to feel no guilt. Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to do away with yours. Jesus had no fears; God wants the same for you. Jesus had no anxiety about death; you needn’t either. God’s desire, his plan, his ultimate goal is to make you into the image of Christ.

But how does this change occur? And why does the change seem so slow? If God wants me to be just like Jesus, why do I still seem just like me?

Just Like Jesus, Lucado helps you answer these questions. He helps you understand God’s wonderful ways of transformation. Would you like to know more? Then read on. And remember: God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus.
