He was born into the family of Florence E. DeVoe (Ronnie DeVoe mom) and Ronald Boyd (his father). Ronnie grew up alongside four siblings and attended Newton North High School.

His career peaked in the early 1980s after he joined New Edition, an R&B/pop group. In 1984, they released an album that featured Cool It Now, a track which gained massive praise and attention. As a result, the entire album was rated 2x Platinum.

With the new group, they released 5 hit singles which were in their debut album, Poison. Some of the singles in the album were B.B.D. and Poison. The album did very well as it sold more than five million copies.
Later in 1993, the group released a follow-up album called Hootie Mack. After three years, Ronald Boyd and the New Edition original members recorded their Home Again album. Some of the songs in the album were I’m Still in Love with You and Hit Me Off .
In 2001, they released their third studio album called BBD. They later released Three Stripes.
In 2018, he began featuring in The Real Housewives of Atlanta with his wife Shamari. In December of the same year, the couple released a song called Love Comes Through.
