Sonamoo came into the k-pop industry with a bang, topping the Korean albums charts with their very first EP. Since then, the girl group has not rested on their oars. They have gone ahead to drop other chart-topping albums and have also scooped many awards in the process. How Did Sonamoo Girl Group Come to be?
Sonamoo was founded by TS Entertainment and they made their debut in December 2014. The band originally comprised of seven members namely, Minjae, D.ana, Euijin, High.D, NewSun, Nahyun, and Sumin, and they dropped their debut EP, Déjà Vu, on the 29th of December 2014. Soon after it dropped, the EP topped the Gaon’s weekly albums charts. It also fetched the band a nomination for best new female artists at the 2015 Melon Music Awards.
Since their impressive debut, Sonamoo has released several more EPs including Cushion and I Like U Too Much, both of which reached No. 7 on the charts. The band has also contributed to the official soundtracks of several film projects including The Miracle, Sing for You, and Legendary: Game of Heroes.

Sung Min Jae (Stage name – Minjae)
Minjae is a member of the Sonamoo girl group and she features as the main vocalist of the band. Born into a family of four comprising her, her parents and a younger brother, Minjae’s date of birth is given as 18th of December 1994. A native of Busan, South Korea, the singer whose nickname is Olaf, is bilingual and speaks English fluently. She loves hanging out and visiting popular eating spots. Her favorite colors are mint and indigo and she stands 5 feet 5 inches tall.
Jo Eun Ae (Stage name – D.ana)
D.ana is the low rapper, lead dancer, and sub vocalist of Sonamoo. She was born on the 10th of September 1995 in Seoul, South Korea. D.ana loves watching movies. She also enjoys listening to music while taking long trips. The rapper/dancer is also a budding actress and has featured in a drama titled The Miracle. She is 5 feet 7 inches tall.
Hong Eui Jin (Stage name – Euijin)
Euijin is the main dancer as well as the lead vocalist of the group. Born Hong Eui Jin on the 8th of October 1996 in Gwangju, South Korea, the singer comes from a close-knit family of five, comprising her, her parents, and two older siblings. Euijin initially wanted to go into stage management but subsequently changed her aspirations. In addition to watching Japanese movies and animation, Euijin also loves photography. Her favorite artists include multiple-Grammy winner, Rihanna. The dancer is 5 feet 6 inches tall.
Kim Do Hee (Stage name – High.D)
High.D is the main vocalist of Sonamoo. She was born on the 21st of December 1996 in Gyeonggi, South Korea. She was born into a family of four and has just one sibling, an older sister. The singer is bilingual and is fluent in Korean and English languages. She also knows how to play the piano and her hobbies include watching movies and listening to music. Kim stands at an average height of 5 feet 5 inches and amongst Sonamoo members, only she and Euijin share the same birth year, 1996.
Choi Yoon Sun (Stage name – NewSun)
NewSun is the high rapper and sub vocalist of the group. She was born on the 19th of June 1997, making her the youngest member of the group. Asides music, NewSun is a talented actor and has appeared in several TV and web-based series, including Miracle, Criminal Minds and My Woofy Poofy Love. Despite being the youngest of the Sonamoo members, NewSun is also the tallest. She is 5 feet 9 inches tall and this has earned her the nickname of ‘giant baby’.
Other Facts You Need to Know About Sonamoo and Its Members
Sonamoo previously consisted of seven members. Two of the members namely, Sumin and Nahyun, however, filed a lawsuit in May 2019 seeking to terminate their contracts. In the wake of the suit, TS Entertainment released an official statement on the matter. They claimed that the duo did not discuss with them, or their fellow members, before going to court. They also stated that the pair had carried on without any indication that something was amiss.
Subsequently, the duo cut off all contact with the band and the label, once the suit became public. TS Entertainment described the duo’s actions as insensitive and causing damage to the group’s musical activities. The agency then went ahead to reveal that Sonamoo will continue as a five-member ensemble while they would institute strict legal action against the Nahyun and Sumin. The outcome of both lawsuits is still awaited.
