It’s quite common to come across people describing Jay Shetty as a “social media phenomenon” and the reason for that is not farfetched. The former monk-turned-motivational speaker is one of the most followed individuals on the internet. Renowned for his viral wisdom agenda, Shetty’s videos have been viewed more than four billion times. He has also addressed several multinational companies and in 2017, Forbes named him in their 30 under 30 list. How did Shetty go from being a monk to being an internet sensation? This and more details are unveiled below.

Who Is Jay Shetty and What Is His Age?

Jay Shetty was born on the 6th of September 1987 in London, United Kingdom. He grew up in London and attended Queen Elizabeth School, Barnet. By his own account, he was a shy, introverted, overweight, and nerdy child. This made him a prime target for bullying but he refused to give up. He lived life to the fullest and as a teenager, dabbled into several vices.

Shetty was however forced to re-examine his life after losing two of his pals in painful circumstances. Both experiences made him realize there was a deeper purpose to life and he started searching for it in earnest. The answer finally came while he was in college. Shetty had attended a speech given by a monk and found his talk of self-sacrifice inspiring. He itched to follow a similar path but bided his time until he completed his degree. He then promptly set off for India.

Career Beginning and Rise to Fame

Jay Shetty spent the next three years training with a Vedic monk. He studied the timeless philosophies and sciences of the East, as well as ancient practices of breathe and mind control. He also utilized this period to assist the needy. After three years of the monastic lifestyle, Shetty returned to London and started coaching employees of various companies. He also took to posting motivational videos online and one of them caught the attention of Huffington Post founder, Ariana Huffington. Ms. Huffington invited the young man to produce content for The Post and his fame spread like wildfire.

Since then, Shetty’s career has been on an upward trajectory. He runs coaching programs on innovation, personal development, and organizational transformation. He is also a highly sought-after public speaker and has delivered keynote addresses before companies such as L’Oreal, HSBC, EY, Facebook, Coca-Cola, Google, and Microsoft. Shetty is also the founder of a viral video production company, Icon Media, as well as a popular podcast known as On Purpose. The social entrepreneur has thus far received several awards including the 2016 ITV Asian Media Award for best blog.

How He Was Exposed for Plagiarism

In August 2019, an internet celebrity, Nicole Arbour, accused Jay Shetty of plagiarising some of his quotes. She alleged that his whole career was based on stolen ideas and gave instances of several viral quotes that he had claimed as his own. One of them is a notable quote by Michael J. Herbert that goes thus:

A relationship without trust is like a car without gas; you can sit in it all you want but it won’t go anywhere.

Jay shared the quote on his handle without attributing it to the original author. Since these allegations came to light, several people have criticized Shetty on twitter. The man is yet to directly respond to the grave allegations. It, however, seems that there is a modicum of truth in Arbour’s claims as Shetty has taken to crediting quotes to their authors in his recent posts.

Where Is Jay Shetty From?

Jay Shetty holds a British nationality but his parents are originally from India. His mom hails from Northern India and immigrated to London at the age of 16. His dad, on the other hand, is from Bangalore, Southern India, and moved to the U.K. after he got married.

Shetty’s parents did not have it easy when they initially landed in Britain. They had to work very hard in order to provide their children with several opportunities. Shetty has since expressed his appreciation for all the sacrifices that his parents made for him and his younger sister.

Jay Shetty is happily married to Radhi Devlukia-Shetty. Radhi is equally British-Indian and was born on the 30th of July 1990. She completed her studies in the United Kingdom and is now a plant-based dietician and recipe developer. Radhi is also a bigtime advocate of conscious living and wellness; she uses her Instagram account to share valuable health and nutritional insights.

Shetty and Radhi first met in a meditation class during his college days. They later tied the knot in 2016. The couple has since established a lovely union and often collaborate in their online endeavors.
